The Leaping Gazelle
(for Endy Chavez)
endycatch1.jpg (13305 bytes)

There’s a ‘leaping gazelle’
on the New York Mets
And his name is Endy Chavez

He trots down fly balls
from right to left
flying, diving, robbing

defying the laws of physics

There he is!
sliding, lunging, recovering
doubling-up runners in scoring position
(left there only wishing
they had a chance against
this graceful Metropolitan)

Yes, there's a ‘leaping gazelle’
on the New York Mets
And his name is Endy Chavez

At the plate the ‘leaping gazelle’ turns into a jaguar,
the cheetah, the gritty lion on the prowl
(Fastball hit-on and pierced up the middle
finding its way thru the hole)
Endy’s jets ignite from under his feet
he slides safely into second, third and home
his uniform a dusty mess
and
the taste of victory in his eyes

He can fool 50,000 fans
and an ace on the mound
with a surprise drag-bunt
that makes the crowd stand on end
the team celebrates….once again
‘cause Endy has saved the day

Yes, there’s a ‘leaping gazelle’
on the New York Mets
and his name is Endy Chavez

The player with pure, New-York-Mets-hustle
off the fence, against the fence
at the plate
always in the clutch
always in a rally
always full of surprises
always Endy, Endy, Endy
and a happy ending to all!

yes, there’s a ‘leaping gazelle’
on the New York Mets
and his name is Endy Chavez
and
his name
is
Endy Chavez!
